The atrium is nearly four times the height of Niagara Falls.

Beijing is no stranger to giant, glass skyscrapers – in fact, there seems to be a new one every week – but China’s capital’s latest addition, the Leeza SOHO, is no ordinary high-rise.

As far as height goes, the 207m tower isn’t the world’s tallest, but for this new superstructure it’s what’s on the inside that counts. On stepping through the doors, visitors are greeted by the world’s tallest entrance hall – a spacious central courtyard stretching almost to the tower’s top.

The Empire State Building has a New 102nd Floor Observatory

There’s a slight irony to viewing the New York skyline from the Empire State Building – the most iconic feature is missing, because you’re standing on it.

A pop-culture giant – from the arch-romance of Sleepless in Seattle to the vertiginous thrills of King Kong – the 1,454 ft skyscraper is to New York what the Eiffel Tower is to Paris, and around 4 million people a year flock to its world-famous viewing platform.

Recently, skyscraper height has become something of a competition.

The world’s nine tallest buildings have all been completed in the last nine years, most of them in Asian megacities like Shanghai, Seoul and Dubai. Saudi Arabia has now joined the party with a planned mile tall structure named the Kingdom Tower, already rising from the desert like a giant middle finger to their rivals.

Infinity pools are having a bit of a moment.

Plans are already in motion to build the world’s first 360-degree infinity pool atop a skyscraper in Central London. And the Palm Tower in Dubai is nearing completion of one the world’s highest infinity pools, a 930,000 litre tank raised 689ft off the ground.
