Why Should Never Share Your Makeup

Share your secrets, share your dreams, share your food but don’t ever share your makeup. No — not even with your BFF.

The logic is simple: Would you share your toothbrush or roll-on deodorant (gross, right?) then there is no reason why you should share your makeup brush or eye pencil either. Swapping cosmetics sounds fun, but when you do that — you are also trading germs. We all know makeup brushes and beauty blenders carry bacteria – and sharing your products with others mean you’re adding their share of germs too.

Here are a few consequences that would seriously make you think twice before borrowing your sister’s powder brush next time:

1. Eye Makeup

Dermatologists have warned us time and again that sharing cosmetics, especially mascara, eye shadows and eyeliners can lead to a bad eye infection — possibly Conjunctivitis and Staph infection. With no skin layers to protect, eyes tend to be the most sensitive part of the face thus, making the transmission of germs easy.

2. Makeup Brushes

Believe it or not — there is a whole family of germ breathing on your skin surface and every time you blend foundation and bronzers on your skin, you transfer those bacteria to your makeup brushes. It’s bad enough that we don’t wash our brushes regularly but to swap them is like inviting acne and breakouts. If you’re using someone’s foundation or blush — make sure you have your own brush with you.

3, Lipsticks

You've done it a million times without any side-effects so why would something happen now? Well, just because you escaped unscathed before doesn't mean you're immune to viruses. No matter how badly you want to swatch your friend's new lippies — resist. Inanimate objects with chemical compounds catch viruses easily so if the person gets cold sores, you can also get a cold sore outbreak, which tends to stay for the rest of your life.

4. Makeup Testers

Buying makeup that compliments your skin tone is a tough job and of course, that's what makeup testers are here for. But you don't know how many people have tried the same products before you or where those hands have been. Resist the urge to try out makeup for free.
If you can't — then don't apply the product directly onto your skin, take a bit on your clean fingers and test it. Wipe it off as soon as you're done.
