Whether it's a moustache-like dark patch around your mouth or decade old acne scars – pigmentation in any form is a big bummer. Yes, you can cover it with makeup - but who doesn't want naturally flawless skin?

Dermatologists define pigmentation as the darkening of an area of skin caused by the increase of melanin. It’s fairly common among people with dark and olive skin tone but that doesn’t mean people with lighter tones walk free of pigment-troubles. The main cause of pigmentation is inflammation including acne, sun exposure and hormonal imbalances.

Lesson 1: Invest in a good broad spectrum sun block and eat green.

The skincare industry is filled with effective (and expensive) products that can considerably reduce the dark patches. But nothing beats the benefits of natural ingredients and century old DIYs that actually work wonders for your complexion.

Here are some tried-tested-and-approved DIYS that you should totally try at home:

1. Lemon and honey

Lemon juice is God-sent bleaching agent. Add a tablespoon of honey and massage the dark area around your mouth every day. Leave it overnight for best results.

2. Oatmeal and tomato juice pack

Mix some oatmeal with curd and tomato juice. Apply this mixture on the dark areas and leave it for a few minutes before washing it off with cold water. This easy DIY works best for lightening darkened skin on the upper lip.
BONUS: Scrub some on your lips to get smoother and naturally plumper lips too.

3. Gram flour mask

Prepare a paste using 1 teaspoon of gram flour, 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder, and 1/2 cup of curd. Apply this skin lightening pack over the dark spots and leave it on for 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water after.

Now remember, the key here is to identify which ingredients work best for your skin type and to be consistent with the treatment. Don’t expect results overnight.
